SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol which is used to connect to a web server and conduct various tasks via a command line. The protocol is used by many experienced users, as the data transmitted over it is encrypted, so it may not be intercepted on the way by a 3rd party. SSH access could be employed for a lot of things with regards to the type of web hosting account. With a shared hosting account, in particular, SSH is one of several ways to import/export a database or to upload a file if the website hosting server allows for it. In case you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH may be used for pretty much everything - you may install software or restart specific services like the web server or the database server that run on the machine. SSH is used typically with UNIX-like Operating Systems, but there are clients that enable you to use the protocol if your computer is running a different Operating System as well. The connection is made on TCP port 22 by default and the remote server always listens for incoming connections on that port although lots of service providers change it for security reasons.

SSH Telnet in Cloud Website Hosting

SSH access is offered with all cloud website hosting packages we offer you. With some of them, it's provided as standard, while with others it's an additional upgrade that you can include with several mouse clicks from your website hosting CP. You can obtain SSH access through the section related to it in which you shall also find the information you need to connect - the host, the port number and the username. You will be able to choose the password that you will use and, if required, you will be able to change it with several mouse clicks from the same location. All of the commands which could be used with our shared plans are listed in a help article alongside relevant instances. If the SSH access function is allowed for your account, you will also be able to upload files using your favorite FTP client via an SFTP connection.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Hosting

SSH access is included as standard with some of our semi-dedicated server plans, while with others you could add it via the hosting Control Panel if needed - even just for the current month. In any case, you can activate and de-activate the function with a single click through the SSH section of the CP. In the same place, you will discover the server name, the port number and the username required to connect to our platform. You'll also find a box in which you could enter the password you want to use, because it doesn't need to be the same as the one you use to log into the Control Panel. For better security, you could also change it as often as you want. A complete list of the commands that can be performed in a semi-dedicated account is provided in our Knowledge Base, alongside the syntax and a couple of examples. An extra feature after SSH access is activated will be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP through any FTP client which supports this type of connections.

SSH Telnet in VPS Hosting

The virtual private server plans which we offer include SSH access by default, not as a paid upgrade or a function which you need to activate. The minute your new server is ready, you'll be able to connect and start working on your content using the login details that you have entered throughout the order process. A copy of the SSH credentials shall be sent to you via e mail too. As your VPS will be isolated from the others on the physical web server, there are no limitations regarding what you can or can't do using SSH. You can download, set up and manage any piece of software which will run on a Linux server, reboot the whole server or simply a certain software component, and work with files, folders and databases with virtually no restrictions. All you will require for that is a console or an SSH client on your end.
